MFC HELIOS 1250 WINDSURF PRO PACK 2023 TEST REVIEW
The Verdict
With its flow-like nature, MFC’s Helios is a foil that will no doubt appeal to the more surf-orientated riders out there. Don’t be fooled however, the Helios is capable of providing the necessary stability to pick up some speed on the straights whilst performing exceptionally in banking turns.
The Lowdown
MFC’s Helios is a modular hydrofoil that offers windsurfing, wing foiling, and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) options for those seeking versatility on the water. At the heart of the Helios Foil lies its 85 cm carbon mast and the 76 cm fuselage, which is a sleek, streamlined design, seamlessly merging with the mast. The Helios front wing on test has an area of 1250 cm (1800 and 1440 also available) with a chord that changes through its span, being longest in the centre of the wing where the main lift is generated. The agile outline hints that the foil will perform well for banking carves and manoeuvres. The 300 cm back wing completes the package, enhancing the foil’s overall balance and performance.
The MFC Helios range offers interchangeable wings between MFC foils, enabling riders to customise their setup for specific conditions and preferences. This modular design is further enhanced by the inclusion of shims in 0, 1.5 and 2.5 angles, allowing for fine-tuning of the foil’s performance.
Brand Claim
“The Helios front wings are designed to be stable and fly at low speeds, perfect for your first time foiling, be it wind, wing, SUP, or surf.”
Performance
When getting going on MFC’s Helios, the foil responds well to positive rider input as it builds speeds and begins to fly. The Helios delivers a free and flowing feeling at slow speeds, allowing riders to get in ‘flow’ with the foil. This foil can maintain flight at low speeds on the straights, a welcome asset for those looking for a cruiser ride. As the foil picks up speed, it begins to find impressive stability, which gives the rider the confidence to sit into the foil and drive. This stability is a critical component of the Helios’s performance, as it enables riders to push and find more speed. As speed is found, the foil allows riders to bank the board over slightly and commit to the harness. However, the Helios’s real magic lies in its cornering abilities. As the rider enters a turn, the foil demands commitment, driving the foil around the bend with precision and speed. This characteristic results in a surf-like feeling around the turns, producing a real sense of connection between the rider and the foil through the turn. With its initial flowing feel, stability at top speeds, and surf-like cornering, the Helios will be a perfect companion for those looking for a more playful foil that can do it all.
